The war in Tigray did not only destroy lives, homes, hospitals and livelihoods. It also attacked the foundations of the region’s future by depriving an entire generation of children of education. In January 2025, the European Commission’s Directorate-General for European Civil Protection and Humanitarian Aid Operations reported that approximately 2.4 million school-aged children in Tigray had been denied education for three academic years.
